In the 1870’s Victorians took what had been the sailor’s shipboard bed and hung it from trees or porch rafters creating the ultimate indulgence for a summer afternoon nap—the hammock.
Try throwing diced orange rinds into flower beds. This keeps squirrels away, they don’t like the smell. On June 6, 1933, the first motion-picture “drive-in” theater was opened in Camden, New Jersey. Space was provided for 500 cars and the screen measured 40 by 50 feet. Pinch shoot tips of chrysanthemum, impatiens, petunia and coleus to promote bushier growth. Remove spent blooms of peony, iris, delphinium and other flowers. Mow grass regularly, maintaining height at about ½ inch taller than usual to protect crown of plant from heat stress. Supplement water as needed. Most plants need an inch of water every week or 10 days. New plantings of shrubs and trees may require more. Sprinkle your flowers with a mixture of sugar and water to attract butterflies. Weeds are easier to pull, roots and all, when they are wet so save that chore for a rainy day. Female mosquitoes are attracted to carbon dioxide (what you exhale) and sweat. They also like sweet scents so avoid using perfume or highly scented lotion when they’re around.
