The Ides of March In Roman times, ides was known as a deadline for selling debts. Calendars featured ides on the 15th of March, May, July and October or on the 13th during other months. The Ides of March took on special significance during the reign of Julius Caesar in 44 B.C. His brutal quest for power led to his murder in the Senate House by a group of prominent Romans on March 15. Shakespeare commemorated Caesar’s assassination in 1599 in his play “Julius Caesar”. The famous line “Beware the Ides of March” was the warning uttered by a soothsayer to Julius Caesar, encouraging him to stay away from the Senate on March 15. Caesar’s death transformed Roman history, as it was a central event in marking the transition from the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire. |
