5. In 1959, Ruth Handler’s idea was rejected by the Mattel Corp., a company that she and her husband, Elliot, had founded in their garage some years before. After revising her product, Handler reintroduced “Barbie”, named after her daughter. “Ken”, named after her son, was introduced in 1961.
