It’s time to do a little housecleaning as birds travel back to their familiar Indiana homes. Here are some tips to prepare your bird houses for these springtime guests.
  • Make sure there is a hole for venting hot air, another for draining rainwater and a panel that opens and closes for easy cleaning.
  • Clean birdhouses at least once a year.
  • Put houses near shrubs and bushes for bird safety zones.
  • Leave nesting material outside the house and let birds find it themselves.
  • Place houses 4-6 feet above the ground making it easier for babies to take their first flight.
  • Avoid birdhouses with perches, which allow predators to get a foothold.
  • Hang a metal house in a shady area so it doesn’t absorb sunlight.
  • Face bird houses south to southeast for more sun.

The Ides of March
In Roman times, ides was known as a deadline for selling debts. Calendars featured ides on the 15th of March, May, July and October or on the 13th during other months.

The Ides of March took on special significance during the reign of Julius Caesar in 44 B.C. His brutal quest for power led to his murder in the Senate House by a group of prominent Romans on March 15.

Shakespeare commemorated Caesar’s assassination in 1599 in his play “Julius Caesar”.  The famous line “Beware the Ides of March” was the warning uttered by a soothsayer to Julius Caesar, encouraging him to stay away from the Senate on March 15. Caesar’s death transformed Roman history, as it was a central event in marking the transition from the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire.
