Once a year, the groundhog, affectionately known as Punxsutawney Phil, becomes the center of attention as he predicts the severity of the last half of the winter season.

According to legend, if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather. If he does not see his shadow, there will be an early spring.

Groundhogs are vegetarians that love soybeans. The also like grasses, legumes, and vegetables.

This animal is one of the few mammals that really hibernates. The deep sleep starts in late fall and continues into March.

Groundhogs whistle when alarmed or in the spring when courting.
